Right now I am sitting here waiting for the doctor to call me. I was hoping for the best but it seems now as if another surgery is unavoidable. When I had my 3rd D&C June 1, I was told I would get a period within 8 weeks. Well, Aunt Flo never came to visit, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and waiting a full two weeks before contacting the doctor. When I finally scheduled an appointment with the specialist, they did an ultrasound and a blood test. The ultrasound showed extra tissue and pockets of fluid but the blood test was especially revealing. It showed I had HCG in my blood. What the...??!! A low level of 106, but still there, and enough to prevent Aunt Flo, and pregnancy of course.
The fertility specialist decided to monitor me for a couple weeks to make sure my levels were going down so I dutifully went and got my blood drawn twice, each ten days apart. Unfortunately, the second draw showed a level of 97HCG and third draw found my level jumped back up to above 100. At that point, the fertility specialist transferred me back into the care of the OB Dr who performed my D&C in June so he could "take it from here." Wonderful. Well, just so you know, there are not really many options when you have HCG in your blood and it won't go away on its own. I REALLY wanted to avoid another surgery because I didn't want to aggravate the Ashermans so we decided to treat it with a cancer drug called Methotrexate. The first shot dropped my level from low 100 to 67. Yippee! Now we're getting somewhere! Continued getting blood drawn on a weekly basis and found that after the initial drop, my level stabilized in the mid 50's and wouldn't budge. At this point, the doctor was starting to question whether the pregnancy was trophoblastic in nature so I was sent for another ultrasound and a chest e-ray to make sure there were no cancer cells in my lungs. The test ruled out cancer in the lungs so I thought I was golden. I still didn't want surgery so we decided to do another shot of Methotrexate. The second shot dropped my level to 27. Hooray!! That was last Monday. Now today I find out yesterday's blood test came back at 24. Virtually no change. Since it has been seven months now without a period (March, to be precise), I will most likely be transferred into the care of an OB oncologist in Voorhees.
Will you continue to pray with me that God would heal my body? I feel this is my only option at this point since doctors don't seem to be able to help me. This last year especially has been particularly stressful and seemingly never-ending. Tom and I would both like to move past this drama but things keep happening to draw us back into it all. My best course of action is to do my best to keep busy focusing on other things and continue to pray, Dear Lord Have Mercy! To be continued...
UPDATE: Dr called. As I thought, they are sending me over to an OBGYN oncologist. Going to get an appointment with him this week sometime. We will have a consult with him but they will most likely do another D&C. We are going to request that they do a hysteroscopy (a little mini camera) at the same time so to try to avoid another Asherman's.
We're praying for you Dawn, everyday.
